The
German Shepherd Dog
has the misfortune of being the most striking of breeds. This
has made it a
popular show dog and pet, often resulting in physical types that
conform to fashion rather than the Standard, and eroding the qualities
of character that make this breed unique. This is a working dog,
not just a show animal or suburban pet. It must be protected by
breeders who understand its character and abilities and can put
it to work, or its essential qualities will be lost forever.

The
Breed Standard
is a written document, codifying the qualities of this wonderful
breed. Like any document, it has been subject to personal interpretation,
often hugely uninformed. To preserve what this breed was intended
to be, I am updating my illustrated standard to explain every facet
of breed type, structure and movement, as well as the temperament
required of a working dog. This will be the most comprehensive analysis
of the standard available anywhere and will be available in pdf
format for free download. I am aiming for completion by the end
of 2008.
